Steps to Take During a Dental Emergency

dca-blog_235-dental-emergencies

A painful dental emergency such as a severe toothache or knocked-out tooth isn’t just an inconvenience or an expense. If you don’t get emergency dental care promptly, you could end up with costly future repairs, severe infection that spreads to other parts of your body, or premature tooth loss. Even if an injury doesn’t seem severe, it’s best to obtain professional evaluation immediately. Store your dentist’s phone number in your cell phone, or keep it in a place where you can find it easily. If your family dentist doesn’t provide after-hours care, visit an emergency dental clinic or your local hospital’s emergency room.

Listed below are tips for handling the five most common dental emergencies until you can get medical attention.

  1. Knocked-Out Permanent Teeth: Rinse the tooth gently to clean it, but do not scrub it. Unless the tooth belongs to a small child or a person who may become unconscious, attempt to store it inside the mouth so that saliva will help preserve it, and keep it moist. If this is not practical, store the tooth in a cup of milk, and obtain emergency care within two hours for the best chance of saving the tooth.
  2. Fractured Teeth:

Rinse your mouth with plain water, and place a cold compress against your face to reduce swelling in the injured area. Find and save any tooth fragments, and see your dentist immediately. Untreated broken or fractured teeth can result in long-term dental issues.
  3.

Loose Adult Teeth:

If the tooth only moves slightly, gently press it back into alignment, and hold it in place with moistened gauze. Don’t force the tooth into its socket. Try to obtain medical attention within 30 minutes of the injury.
  4. Serious Tongue, Cheek, or Lip Bites:

Gently wipe the wound with a clean, moistened cloth. To ease swelling or bleeding, apply cold compresses. If bleeding is severe or does not stop within 15 minutes, visit a hospital emergency room immediately.
  5. Severe Toothache:

Rinse your mouth with warm tap water, and use dental floss to remove any food trapped between teeth. If pain persists, or you develop a fever, call your dentist in Temple Terrace. Never place aspirin on the tooth or gum.
